Michael Guzy III

University of Western Michigan

My name is Michael Guzy and I just finished four years at Lincoln-Way East High School. While in high school I participated in Best Buddies which is a club that involves kids with special needs. You get to hangout with them and do a bunch of fun activities together. I was also in another club called Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA.) We learned about being a businessman or woman, and how he or she acts in different situations. We went to dinners to show how one might act when they are out with clients. We also competed in events that had to due with business topics.  I have also been playing hockey for my whole life. I got my first pair of skates when I was two years old. Growing up I played for two teams, the Orland Park Vikings and The Chicago Bruins. My senior year I played for my high school team.

My family and I have been involved in Advocate Children’s Hospital since I was young. I was born with a congenital heart defect and had two open heart surgeries as a baby. As I am growing I will need another one in the future to replace a valve.  My family began giving back right away. They held an annual golf outing to raise money for the hospital. I have been part of that event and others, such as an annual breakfast with Santa. It’s very rewarding to be able to bring the gifts to the hospital that people donate year after year at this event. It also feels good to hear how much money we raise each year and exactly what it goes towards at the hospital. One year it replaced the furniture in the parents waiting room, the same one my parents waited in when I was staying there as a tiny patient.  As a family we have also been involved with the Ronald McDonald house, which is located right across the street from the hospital.  When I was young, I was one of few who got to shovel out the dirt on the grounds the house was to be built on.  Since then, my family and I have gone there to make and serve meals to families who have children in the hospital as they stay overnight for countless days at the Ronald McDonald House.  Bringing food, cooking it in there kitchen and serving these families is something my families and I have done countless times.  Again, it feels good to give back to a place that has done so much for me.

I am currently enrolled into Western Michigan University where I plan to pursue a business degree in Finance and Accounting. Over the past two years at Lincoln-Way I had a great teacher that sparked my interest in business. I took her Personal Finance class junior year and absolutely loved it. When I was signing up for my senior classes I took Honors Accounting and Marketing as well as Social Media. Taking those classes in high school helped me realize that I  want to go into the Business world. My goals in the next four years is to get involved with my degree. I want to start networking myself as soon as freshman year so that I can separate myself from the other people in my field landing an internship. As soon as I get to college I’m going to sign up for Registered Student Organizations. These are clubs that help you build your network and more understanding of your major. Also, I will be signing up for Business Externship Programs which are one to three days of learning a position in a company and how they operate. This can build a relationship with you and the company. I can possibly get an internship as soon as freshman or sophomore year. I am ready to put in hard work and get out of my comfort zone right away so that my network keeps growing and growing every year.

Also I want to study abroad. I want to take advantage of this opportunity so that I can do something I have never done and be more globally engaged and discovery driven. Statistics say students who study abroad have more job offers, higher GPAs, and are more creative. I want to succeed in those three pillars and I’m ready to break out my comfort zone when studying abroad. I will also get involved by playing club hockey at WMU and staying fit in the weight room.  My health is a major goal of mine.  I enjoy working out, lifting weights and strengthening my body.
