A Century of STAC: the Cornerstone of the Securities Industry Our journey began over a century ago when a small group of equity traders sought to enjoy a day on the golf course. In the late 1910s, they participated in The Bond Club of Chicago’s annual golf outing, and their enthusiasm led to the creation of their own event, designed to attract more participants from the equity space. The inaugural outing was such a success that in 1925, it became official—thus, the Security Traders Association of Chicago (STAC) was born. As Chicago's trading community flourished, so did STAC. Our success inspired other cities to form their own associations, and as STAC gained momentum, the financial landscape faced significant challenges. The Crash of 1929 sent shockwaves through the
industry, but STAC’s leaders, alongside their counterparts in STALA, rose to the occasion. In a pivotal meeting in Chicago, these industry trailblazers convened to explore how they could collaborate with Congress to ensure that new securities laws
would be effective and practical. The result? The Securities Act of 1933 and the Exchange Act of 1934, which still define the securities industry today. Not stopping there, STAC played a crucial role in the establishment of the National Security Traders
Association in 1934, further solidifying our leadership in the financial world. Click here to read STAC member memories, market insights and fun facts from our storied history.
