As STAC celebrates its 100th anniversary, Ted Bilharz stands out as a key figure whose career reflects the organization's enduring mission and impact. Ted joined STAC during a pivotal time in the industry, as the Cboe trading floor transitioned from open outcry to electronic trading. He recognized the importance of building relationships beyond the floor and turned to STAC to grow his network and deepen his understanding of the broader securities landscape.
His adaptability and commitment to learning—especially through mentors and STAC members like Patty Schuler—underscore the value STAC provides in professional development. Ted's belief in the power of networking and continuous education mirrors STAC’s core values, making him a strong advocate for the organization’s role in empowering professionals and shaping the future of the industry. “Uncle Teddy’s” dedication to mentorship, philanthropy and community engagement exemplifies the spirit that has defined STAC for the past century—and will continue to guide it into the next.
Why did you join STAC?
I joined STAC at a stage of my career when I was well-acquainted with many individuals on the Cboe trading floor. However, I had limited connections with professionals in my industry who worked off-floor. This period also marked a significant shift on the Cboe trading floor, transitioning from the traditional open outcry trading to a predominantly electronic trading environment.
What professional skillset helped you succeed throughout your career?
Understanding and adapting to the rapidly evolving nature of our industry was essential during this period. Having a strong network of industry professionals was also key.
What would you tell your younger self just starting your career?
Start working on your network of industry professionals from the beginning of your career.
Can you share an example of a STAC member who served as a mentor to you earlier in your career, and/or was a key collaborator for you?
When I joined STAC, I had a solid understanding of trading stocks and options within our business. However, I lacked insight into the clearing side of our business and how it operates. Patty Schuler played a pivotal role in teaching me about the middle and back-office processes involved in clearing stocks and options.
How would you say STAC can increase the value an employee brings to their organization?
STAC provides our members access to a vast network of security industry professionals. Any security organization would greatly benefit from encouraging their employees to become STAC members.
Why are the educational and networking opportunities STAC offers so critical to someone starting out in/looking to advance/navigate their career in the industry?
I firmly believe that the strength of one's career is directly tied to the size and quality of their network.
What is your favorite STAC event and why?
The Mid-Winter Meeting, which offers individuals an incredible opportunity to network with over 500 security industry professionals. It also provides valuable insights through various panels discussing the latest industry updates.
Who is someone at STAC that you’d recommend new members network with and why?
New members should make it a priority to network with anyone on our board. This is an amazing mix of industry veterans who bring an unmatched wealth of knowledge on our business – and are always willing to help and share their experiences.
Why is the STAC Fund so important to the community?
Giving back to the community isn't just an option for successful organizations, it's an absolute necessity.
